We All Get to be 50+ So Let’s Have Fun!

I have several fun things I’d like to share with you…so read on!

Sexy Hillary

In this recent column, “Can She Win if She Can’t Win?” by Susan Swartz of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, I read something quite heartening.

Sharon Stone is on record as saying that “Hillary Clinton has too much sexual energy to become president.” Now, I am not commenting on whether or not Hillary should run, and I don’t like the fact that if you are a woman who has sexual energy, you cannot hope to win a presidential race. But, I love that Hillary, 59, is considered to have a steamy sexuality about her. Now that’s putting a new face on 50+!

50+ dating and marriage is on the upswing as evidenced by the popularity of internet dating sites, such as 50 Years Plus, eHarmony, Match.com, and Yahoo Personals. And, apparently we’ve grown a little smarter through the years and balance emotion with practicality when making choices.

I personally know several women who have married at 50+. I call them the Myth Busters. I love that we continue to shatter time held beliefs and are obliterating the stereotypes of what life looks like at 50+. It’s not our parent’s 50+!!!

Juicy Tomatoes

I recently had the opportunity to have lunch with Susan Swartz. An indefatigable 50+, she is a featured columnist and reporter for the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, a public radio commentator, and an author who has just published the sequel to her enormously popular book “Juicy Tomatoes: Plain Truths, Dumb Lies, and Sisterly Advice About Life After 50.”

We talked about the births of both Juicy Tomatoes and 50Fabulous.com, and our own experiences with the 50+ years. Having read Juicy Tomatoes and as a fan of her column, I already knew she was a talented author. But, I was delighted to learn that she is also warm, intelligent, generous, and possesses a wise wit.

When a 50+ woman at the table next to us overheard our conversation about the book, she asked to copy the title so that she could order it! I think this helps to prove the point that 50+ women are hungry for information, presented with humor, on navigating this journey, and how we have an innate sense of camaraderie because so many of us are taking the journey together.

Susan’s new book is titled “Juicy Tomatoes: Ripe Living after 50,” and it is definitely a must read for every 50+Fabulous woman!

Through the stories of 50+ women, Susan ingeniously weaves inspiration, ideas, politics, sex, activism, love, loss, and more with fun tips (such as how to wave like Goldie Hawn and how to be a hottie after fifty). Have some fun and find out how to “live Juicy” by checking out Susan’s website http://www.juicytomatoes.com, and order a copy of her books too!

Susan will be speaking at the Women of a Certain Age Conference in San Francisco on September 15. Don’t miss her there!

‘Tis the Season

Those who know me well, know that years ago I deemed September as my birthday season. The season lasts exactly one month, as just one day is not nearly enough. Rarely can all your busy friends get together on the same day; your birthday may land on a Tuesday when you’ll need to wait till Saturday to truly celebrate; and, isn’t it nice when you can make your friends feel better because they have a whole month to send those cards?

I’ve also incorporated the “be kind to your friends and family” policy. This entails that you give them a warning as the season is approaching. I’ll never forget when my father forgot my mother’s birthday. I was quite young, but remember my surprise, upon arriving at my grandparents home, to find that my mother received hugs, happy birthday wishes and gifts. And, I will always remember the look of horror on my father’s face as he realized he’d committed a major faux pas, and how we kids were so upset that we didn’t have anything for our mother! I determined at that moment that I would never let anyone forget my birthday…as a favor to them, of course.

So, I’m sharing these tips with all of you in hopes that you too will celebrate your next 50+ birthday as a season, and let your friends and family know way in advance. It really is the most considerate thing you can do…for them, of course.
