Television: Time Sink or Fitness Opportunity

Many of the women I know do not like to admit that they watch T.V. Or, at least they won’t ‘fess up to the amount of time they have it on. I hear things like “I only turn it on for a little background noise,” or “I like to watch the history channel,” or “I like to watch foreign films.” Well, I am here to tell you that the statistics site that people spend approximately 5 hours a day in front of the T.V. That is a LOT of time. And, we “aint” just watching documentaries! So, let’s embrace the fact that yes, we do watch T.V. Let’s come up with another strategy so that it isn’t a waste of time and doesn’t just gel our body and minds.

When I cook, I turn on the T.V. generally tuned to Turner Classic Movies. I love escaping into the old black and white movies with stars like Audrey Hepburn, Irene Dunne, Bette Davis, Cary Grant, Fred Astaire, and Myrna Loy. And, I never feel guilty because I am actually getting something done…cooking.

But, this is my new idea on how to fit physical fitness into an already busy life. Let’s say we want to watch Oprah. It is a great time to do those leg lifts, sit ups, and weight lifting for fabulous arms. And, if you happen to have a T.V. in a room with a treadmill, then you also have the opportunity to maximize time while watching the news. This is especially good because the news is often so traumatizing that you need a vigorous workout for instant stress relief. How about slipping in the movie Chicago with Rene Zellweger, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Queen Latifa! Doesn’t it make you want to dance around the room?

Can you imagine how we would all look and feel if we exercised for 5 hours every day? OK, well, how about 1 hour a day for starters?
