Today’s Economy: End of Your Lifestyle or an Opportunity to be Creative?

None of the pundits can quite agree whether we’re in a recession or a depression. One thing we all know is that the economic situation has hit us all HARD! Many have lost their jobs, their homes, their life savings, and it’s downright scary. In my own life, we are tied to the high tech industry, have weathered many lay-offs and have another one pending. My elderly mother’s savings have taken a hit just at the time she really needs them as her health care costs spike .

Get in touch with reality:

We were recently out of town for Thanksgiving and, of course, much of the conversation addressed the economic situation. My husband commented that we were going to have to pare expenses “to the bone” to which I responded, “But, we already HAVE!” As everyone (including my husband) laughed at me I had to accept the fact that not ALL of them could be wrong.

So, I have been on-line looking at “frugal sites.” And, surprisingly, I find myself enjoying the challenge to creatively carve a new, frugal lifestyle.

And, reviewing past lifestyle choices might be a really good idea. We can choose to learn from our current situation which is ALWAYS a good thing.

Here are some things to consider:

  • When you’re fearful and anxious, do something for somebody else. It will make you feel better and as bad as things may be for you, many have greater challenges in their lives.
  • Wear fleece. Save the planet and trim your energy bills
  • Read www.50Fabulous.com. It’s free and you get invaluable info from our Experts!
  • Want more time in your day? Turn off the T.V.
  • Play with toys you already have. When is the last time you pulled the kayaks down from the rafters.
  • Ride your bike (it’s a toy you already have). Get exercise, do errands, save money.
  • If you live in a smaller community like I do, try walking to the post office, grocery store, or to meet with a friend.
  • Actually eat the things you cram into your freezer for “later.”
  • Shop in bulk for some things, but remember to support your neighborhood grocery store if you want them to stay in business.
  • Get organized. It makes you feel better and you may find some things to sell on EBAY.
  • Live beneath your means. It’s freeing.
  • Find a way to work from home. Saves gasoline money and tons of time.
  • Get out in nature. You’ll enjoy it, you’ll get some exercise and a new appreciation of how we need to take care of it.
  • Finish off that basement or granny space and rent it out. Or, donate it to someone who really needs it if you don’t need the money.
  • Rob your piggy bank. Mine had over $100 in it!
  • Go to the library. It’s free! They can get just about anything you’d want to read through inter-library loans.
  • Sell that exercise equipment that’s been gathering dust. Or, better yet, use it, get fit, calm your nerves and save your Gym money.
  • Ask elders you respect for tips. They’ve been there and done that.

Many of we mid-life women have been through tough times. We are a resilient group. We are smart, have great ideas and creativity and will come through this hard time victorious! This is something that I know for sure!
