Low Maintenance No More

Low Maintenance No More

Here is my “before” photo. So, what are my issues going into my makeover? Some might call it a shift in metabolism…I, however, point to moving to wine country and socializing over wine, bread and cheese. Whatever the reason, I’ve gained 15 pounds since we moved here and that was not all that long ago. As a Lifetime Member of Weight Watcher’s here I come...again!

Sometimes, when you start a new business and you are so busy and so charged about doing what you love, if you happen on a mirror, it might shock you (as it did me.) And, you have to admit that you’ve let yourself go…that you are not taking care of yourself. At first you panic when your good old standbys, whether they be fashion or makeup, let you down. You know that you must do things differently.

I announced to my husband that after a lifetime of being a “low maintenance” woman, I’ve just graduated. And, this new world is fun and interesting. I think we need a “re-finishing” school at 50+ to redefine or find our 50+ style. Because “style” is something we can have at any age!

As I’ve said before, I will be working with our 50+Fabulous Style Expert, Michele Benza. I don’t know why we never think of Image Consultants as “coaches.” We hire coaches for everything else…personal trainers, life coaches, career coaches. Is it because we feel that we’re just being vain? Pooh on that!

If you can, spend some money on the best possible image consultant you can find. They will honestly assess the wardrobe you have, help you to determine what you need for your lifestyle, tell you what works for you and what doesn’t including the colors are most flattering, and do it all with a velvet hammer. They will work within your budget, have resources to share that you may not know about (like shops with good quality fabrics/styles/merchandise that are budget friendly), and potential discounts at various stores that they will pass on to you.

So, what do I want help with? Developing my 50+ “style,” determining what colors are best for me now, makeup, skin care, hair, and teeth. I’ll also need a nutrition plan and fitness plan that I can live with.

I just turned 50 and I’m still a “blue jeans baby” and way out of date in terms of my appearance. I love the new look you have created for yourself. I want to feel good about myself again too. I have just become single again, just as menapause has set in, and feel frightened by the idea of starting all over again in a relationship. At 50 that’s a scary feeling because I see myself in the mirror and that “sagging” woman looking at me isn’t who I feel I am inside.

Hi Kathy and thank you for sharing yourself. I know that many other women will read this and be able to relate to what you and all of us are going through.

I, too, am a blue jeans gal. In fact, as I write this I am in blue jeans and a long cotton blouse (like the 70s)and find that in the beach community I’m visiting at present, I’m right in style!

I know exactly what you mean about noticing some changes that may be a bit scary at 50. We many pros on the site that are here to help. From my point of view, it is a great time to start being good to yourself.

It’s always been hard for me, but exercise is no longer an option...not just for looking our best, but probably more importantly...feeling our best!

Attitude is another thing that helps...staying as positive as possible, keeping current, and being curious and interested. One thing that I find makes an amazing difference in my attitude and self esteem is (and I would never have believed this if Michele hadn’t suggested it and I have seen for myself what a difference it makes)is simply standing up straight. It makes you feel great about yourself and others treat you with more respect. Strange but TRUE.

As far as dating goes, there are many 50+ dating websites now. Just do a Google search on “50+ dating.” I’ve always felt that if you are interesting and show an interest in other people, you can be irresistible. We have a two great articles by Jaquelin Pearson (in our Love section) entitled “Am I Too Old for Love?” and “The Nuts & Bolts of On-line Dating.”

It’s up to us (if we choose) to make 50+ not so scary for all our daughters, grand daughters, nieces, and friends. I shriek inside when I hear that 50 is the new 30! What’s “cool” is that we are making 50 the NEW 50!

Let me know how you are doing. Oh, and one more suggestion...get a pedometer. I’ve just received my new Omron HJ-720ITC (for around $35. from Amazon.com) Just clip it on or throw it in your pocket and keep track of your steps...easy way to start your fitness program.

Best to you!
Pattie
