What is Interior Design?

What is Interior Design?

As an Interior Designer, I’ve been asked many times “what exactly do you do?’

Depending on how high up the elevator goes, my response is: official “hand-holder,” mediator, marital counselor, financial planner, psychologist, confidant, personal shopper, and space planner. Included in design are furniture, fixtures, equipment specifications, paint and finishes specification, etc. (mostly in that order, and not at all limited to these lists!)  Well, you get the drift!  And notice…not once did I mention the word FLAIR (an overused term in the design world.)

Seriously, my definition, in addition to what the popular and generic definition of what interior design is, would include the following:

Interior design is not just the process of creating functional and beautiful spaces; it’s about designing quality interiors that bring harmony and a feeling of well- being to its occupants, and creates appropriate environments that correspond to the abilities and needs of users.

Not Just Beauty, Function Too!

In the course of every project, designers must consider the materials involved in creating functional, aesthetically pleasing, healthy and affordable places to live, work and interact. As designers, we continually learn all we can not only about environmental issues, but about age-related changes and social and psychological needs to create better environments for all ages and end use. In addition we address issues that pertain to individuals, communities, and the environment alike. We must all understand that no matter what specialty we may say that we practice; good design incorporates aspects of all design specialties.

Good Design is Personal

Successful design depends on a good fit between the person and the environment which is achieved by manipulating the physical environment to compensate for and address the individual’s abilities and needs.

Coming Up

In the next few months I will be addressing many of these issues and more, including:

  • Mixing Contemporary and Traditional
  • Defining Your Color Scheme
  • Downsizing and Aging in Style!
  • Fung Shui
  • How a Little Change Can Make a Big Difference
  • ….and more!

I think that you will find these subjects informative, entertaining, and inspiring to your own inner “design diva”!

I’m excited about sharing my passion for design with you here on 50Fabulous.com. A lot of changes take place in our lives at 50+ and our homes may need to be transformed as well. We may be downsizing, changing locations, or we may finally have the time and money to have some fun being creative. Whatever, I’m here to help.
