Lately I have found myself being “obsessed” with eyewear. Perhaps it is because I find the latest fashion in sunglasses so “in your face” so to speak; they are so big that they really fit only a few people. I realize that I am looking for people wearing glasses and mentally making comments. Of course, as an image consultant I do make a lot of mental notes on people’s attire, hair, makeup, grooming and posture; but lately the glasses have been #1.
For many of my clients, searching for a flattering eyewear is a “casse-tête” (puzzling). Most of them are not used to buying glasses as often as clothes, and therefore they are not confident with such purchases.
It is difficult to know the best fit for the morphology of one’s face and the colors that are complimentary to the skin tone.
If you wear eyeglasses and are looking for frames, you need to know what look you wish to adopt. What is your personality? What kind of image do you want to project? Do you wish a relaxed open style to show that you are approachable? Or to the contrary, you prefer the serious look. Do you want an elegant frame in conjunction with your professional life? Be sure to ask for your image consultant’s professional opinion before investing in a new pair of glasses.
When looking for frames, you should consider the fashion trends, but most importantly the frame has to blend with your style of clothing, your hairstyle, and with the accessories and jewelry you most often wear. Do you wear silver or gold jewelry? “What are the colors I wear the most?”
- Frames should not be wider than the widest part of the face.
- Frames with a high bridge will lengthen a short nose.
- A long nose will appear shorter with a low bridge.
- For close-set eyes, try a clear bridge.
- For wide-set eyes, opt for a dark bridge.
- Frames should never sit higher than the eye brows.
- For a mature face, avoid a square frame.
- Frames have to fit properly, pupils should be centered in the lens, the frame should not move when you smile.
- Bright colored frames are best for darker skin tones.
- Light skin tones are best with lighter colored frames.
Whatever the trend in eyewear, when choosing a frame, consider the overall size. The size of the frame should be proportioned with your face: if it is too large, your face will look narrower, shrunk. If too small, your face will look wider.
Eyeglasses are now so beautiful; they come in all shapes and colors. One of my favorites is the rimless eyewear that comes with a selection of different colors of branches and nose-bridge. As these are interchangeable, you can match their colors with your outfit. Easy to change, the bridge and branches are clipped directly onto the lenses. Rimless frames fit almost any type of face shape; they are particularly effective in making a mature face appear more youthful. So have fun with all the Fabulous choices available and if you need some help, just let me know.

You said not to wear square glasses if your older.I’m 55 and not over weight, but my chin line is sagging,I ordered square shaped rimless glasses. Is this a no no?

Hello Denise,
As the glasses you ordered are rimless, a square frame should be fine. The frame will be barely noticeable. In the future, or perhaps for sun glasses, consider ‘cat-eye’ frames where the external corners are slightly lifted.

Just heard from Rebeca who has questions about eye wear.
Unfortunately the rimless eyewear with interchangeable nose bridge and branches are no longer available. I had found them at a store called ‘See Eye Wear” http://www.seeeyewear.com. Regular rimless glasses are easy to find check http://www.zennioptical.com, there you will find a wide variety. Rimless eyewear are great if you do not wish to attract attention to your glasses. Rimless are great for speakers. I too wear bifocals when I do not wear my contacts. The height of the lens for bifocals is a personal preference.
If you prefer to have fun with your eye glasses, rimless is not for you. As far as recommendations on the shape, it is also personal. I personally believe that following the shape of one’s face is the best. However, if your face is angular, better to wear soft frames.
The color of the frame is important. If your best colors are in the ‘cool’ family wear a ‘cool’ color frame. If your best colors belong to the ‘warm’ family wear a ‘warm’ color frame. Metallic frames are out. With your fair skin and blonde hair, one can say that you have low contrast in your face. Stay with light color frames.

Well, well well. I know exactly the frames you are talking about, unfortunately the last time I checked I was told the interchangeable templates and nose bridge frames no longer exist. They were sold by http://www.seeeyewear.com/
If you ever find them at another resource, let me know.

My husband and I own an Optometry clinic in Lincoln, NE. We carry a line that you can get interchangeable temples. They come in all different colors and patterns. Very fun line. It is by ProDesign which is a Danish company with very high quality and unique designs.

Katie, I know of ProDesign eyewear. I recommend the brand to my clients regularly. I love the fact that the temples are interchangeable.
