I cook because it satisfies something in me—passion, appreciation, creativity, fun appeal. I think, in part, these qualities are the key to my successful cooking experiences. But education also plays a big part. Continuing education in cooking is becoming more common with culinary professionals, and we stay abreast of new trends and techniques through workshops, classes and travel.
For some people, classes can be an adventurous journey, a relaxing pastime, or a pleasurable hobby. Let’s face it. Cooking evokes excitement, reinforces culinary traditions, and solidifies partnerships. Without the pleasure of cooking, life would be really dull and tasteless!
Why Take A Cooking Class?
If you are an experienced amateur chef and don’t think instruction can improve your talent in the kitchen or teach you advanced essential cooking techniques, you may want to reconsider. By attending classes, you can:
- Learn to prepare scrumptious, authentic dishes from travels to regional and global destinations
- Learn from book-touring celebrity chefs how to make fare you would order in a restaurant
- Bond with your significant other in a couples-only class
- Learn creative ways to make delicious meals while adhering to special dietary needs
- Meet like-minded new friends
- Avoid having to do dishes!
Finding Classes
So where can you find great classes that will give you a sense of achievement, pride and fulfillment? Would you like to hone proper culinary techniques, get fabulous recipes, make gorgeous food, or meet the love of your life in a singles-only class? (It’s possible you know!)
The world of cooking is at your fingertips, and you can find a diversity of culinary inspiration from chefs and caterers who provide instruction. Your local community college and culinary academies are also excellent resources. And nowadays, most gourmet cookware stores and specialty markets offer a plethora of cooking subjects from which to choose—everything from wine and food pairing to learning how to execute exotic dishes from various parts of the world.
Recipe for Success
Several years ago a friend told me he wanted to take a cooking class. Although he had been cooking for many years, he didn’t feel confident in the kitchen. I suggested he enroll in a class where he could gain a good understanding of basic skills and techniques—the foundation for successful cooking.
He signed up for one of my Kitchen Basics classes and learned knife skills, kitchen terminology, recipe development and cooking methods such as blanching, roasting, grilling, sautéing and pan-frying. I’m happy to report he became a self-assured home cook who consistently turned out great-tasting meals with ease that everyone enjoyed. He enrolled in culinary school and after graduation, took a position as a personal chef at age 52! Here’s his:
Recipe for Success
- 1 quart desire for more cooking confidence
- 2 cups adventurous spirit
- 1 cup long-time passion for cooking
- 1 cup gratitude
- 1/2 cup enthusiasm
- 3 pinches eagerness
- In a large bowl, combine all ingredients until well mixed.
Cooking classes are enjoyable and economical ways of creating social networks! You will learn new dishes, make new friends, and take home the latest techniques and ideas that will make your home cooking experiences more pleasurable.
So never underestimate the educational value of crème brulee! What’s the key to making your cooking successful?

Hi Cathy - Here’s a link to the Wisconsin Travel Site http://www.travelwisconsin.com/
Under their Food category, they have classes listed. You could also do a google search on “cooking classes” in your particular area. Good luck. Have fun!
