Over 50? Less is Best

In early fall, Saks Fifth Avenue, San Francisco, invited me and four other stylists to put together a fashion show about how people of all ages, shapes and sizes can adapt current trends with style, without being fashion victims. Women who had never walked on a runway before were our models. Mine was in her late sixties and was the most striking on the runway. “What is your secret?” I asked. Her response, “smile and be happy!”

So how can 50+FabulousTM women be beautiful and inspire younger women? Aging beautifully is about our attitude toward life and the curve balls it throws us. It seems to me that women who radiate beauty, embrace life—curve balls included, accept responsibility for their choices, learn from their mistakes and move forward. They also are open to new possibilities and generous in heart and spirit. And, they are often proud of their white hair!

As we move into maturity, our bodies continue to adjust to our changing habits and lifestyle. And, although we might like the body we had…do we really want to be 20 again? I, for one, don’t. As the experts repeatedly remind us, in order to maintain optimum health, it is imperative that we pay careful attention to what we eat, what we think, and also to find time for some form of physical exercise that suits our bodies and our schedules.

After 50, should we avoid certain types of clothing? Definitely. Can we still follow the trends? Absolutely!

At 50+, resist being TOO, too. It’s better to refrain from wearing anything that is “too much”. Such as, skirts that are too short and tops that expose belly buttons and tummies; skirts and pants that are too tight and emphasize curves we might prefer to minimize; and, anything too revealing that expose areas less toned, like the upper arms. Rather go for short or three-quarter length sleeves or ones that are slightly bell-shaped. Too high heels are ungainly and hard on our feet and backs. Look for lower heels that are comfortable but feminine. There are such wonderful choices out there these days. Too plunging necklines detract rather than attract. Tease with a shallow décolleté. Much more sexy that way!

Be a trend watcher and study looks that you like. Read fashion magazines and check fashion websites such as http://www.styles.com. Take notes on ensembles that appeal to you. Make a trip to the nearest large city and observe the trends on the sidewalks and in the department stores. But, just observe, don’t buy impulsively! Also note what you dislike about other 50+ women’s fashion choices. If it is possible, do your clothes shopping in a large metropolitan city, as there are usually a much larger variety of stores, styles, quality and price. If you live in a small town, search out the little specialty boutiques that may carry unique designs that suit you perfectly.

Dare to be edgy and trendy, but remember style, elegance, and good taste are ageless. Think of the stylish people you know. They look great no matter where they are. Their secret: they always dress appropriately for the occasion. So, keep gym clothes in the gym and wear street clothes on the street. No exceptions!

And, don’t forget to pay close attention to your overall image and grooming at all times! That includes hair, nails, and shoes. Check these before you dash out the door! Good grooming indicates that you respect yourself and others and it makes you feel great.

For me, the elements of style are like the makings of a great meal. You need good quality basic ingredients that are fresh and that complement and set off one another beautifully. And remember, real beauty starts with your Fabulous attitude!

How sad it is to see 50+ women dressed like their daughters instead of the women they are. We have lived through turbulent times; times of change and new thinking and attitudes and yet we have managed to survive. As survivors, we have earned the right to act, think and dress as the women we are NOW. I believe this is our problem.
We are a generation of women not seen until now.  For the most part we are more educated than our mother’s generation.  We have been exposed to a more technical world that has brought about great change and we are a part of and a reason for that change.  We are more educated, experienced, and traveled
compared to our mothers.  We have benefitted from better and more advanced medical care and nutrition.  We have taken care of ourselves mentally and physically.  We don’t look or feel like 50+ women and frankly, what is a 50+ woman supposed to look and feel like anyway?! At our age we do know, however, the difference between style and the ridiculous. In closing, we can be modern and look fabulous just by being us!
