Learn Something New: Enroll in You-New-Versity

Learn Something New: Enroll in You-New-Versity

In these uncertain economic times it is more imperative than ever that we keep ourselves current and up to date. A most recent survey suggested that 1in 5 people are concerned about layoffs.

In my coaching practice I specialize in working with mid-life women who are going through (or anticipate) large life transitions: be it a welcome or unwelcome job change, divorce or shift in health.

What all of these transitions have in common is that we may feel like aliens being catapulted into space at warp speed without proper gear- what with our hair on fire and clothes torn to shreds.

I was interviewed for a recent San Francisco Chronicle article (I came to their attention through 50Fabulous) about older workers facing potential layoffs and asked: How should an older worker prepare for re-entering the job market? Additionally, for many it may been many years since their last job search and they may be competing with younger workers for few opportunities? I repeated the mantra (borrowed from Letty Pogrebin). We can’t be young again but we can be new!

A case in point. One mid-life woman, I spoke with, sat down one day and realized that if she did not take action, at best, she was staring down working until retirement in the same stale environment…hardly inspiring. She took the initiative to make a “career renewal” plan. When we spoke, she had just finished taking a year off from work to finish a degree that would open up new possibilities in her field. Today she is in a brand new position in an all new capacity with expanded career opportunities. I spoke with her this morning and marveled at her energetic tone and was inspired as we discussed the following essential tips:

1. Don’t let your life just happen to you, seize the initiative

It’s your life. Be proactive in determining a new vision for your future.

2. You need not be stuck, brainstorm new options

Brainstorming is extremely powerful in opening up creative options.

3. Find supportive people

Fresh, new ideas often come from surprising sources. Get a group of friends or friends of friends together and come up with and write down as many new options as possible. Afterwards, choose the top 3 ideas, make a renewal plan and start to implement.

4. Re-tool yourself

Start researching what it would take to bring your tool kit up to date with the skills you need to stay current. There are many on-line, evening and self-study options available. Check them out.

5. Go back to school if that is what it takes

In addition to job specific skills, you may also want to learn technology skills, freshenup your written and verbal communications, or learn project management skills just to name a few.

Above all get started!
