One source defines “zest” as gusto: vigorous and enthusiastic enjoyment. To have gusto or zest for life, you need to have enough energy.

Fortunately there are actions you can take to consistently havegreater energy and a better mood.

Eat breakfast

It increases overall energy and improves mood throughout the day.

Eat smaller more frequent meals and snacks

They won’t leave you feeling sleepy or sluggish. Try for 3 to 4 hour spacing between meals and snacks for sustained energy and steady mood and blood sugar.

Combine protein, carbs and fiber at meals and snacks

Fish, skinless poultry, loin cuts of beef and pork, dried peas and beans and low fat dairy products are all lean proteins. Some fiber rich carbohydrates are whole grain breads and cereals and whole vegetables and fruits. Your body absorbs these more slowly so your energy and blood sugar remain stable.

Drink enough fluids especially water

Dehydrationcan contribute to fatigue. Aim for one quart of water each day. The high water content of fresh produce makes it a zestful addition to meals and snacks.

Include caffeine

Drink tea to decrease mental fatigue and improve your alertness. Small frequent amounts of coffee in the early part of the day give temporary energy boosts. If you’re a chocolate lover, have a few squares of dark chocolate.

Schedule 30 minutes of moderate exercise

It causes changes in your body that leave you feeling more energetic and its been proven to lift your mood. The 30 minutes can be divided into 10 or 15 minute bouts if that fits your schedule better. .

Get 7-8 hours of sleep

You’ll feel more alert, rested, and energetic.
