More 50+Fabulous Experts

Dawn Harding joins us from Worthing, England, and has lived and worked in many parts of the world - Europe, America, Canada and Hong Kong. As a single mother with two sons to support, she always juggled her responsibilities at home along with a full time secretarial/Executive Assistant job, and a part-time one. The latter covered quite a range: weekend waitress, evening barmaid in an English pub, weed puller in a nursery, stuffing envelopes, sewing the eyes onto small teddy bears at home for a local factory, transcribing surveyors’ reports from tapes, hotel receptionist, modelling, teaching typing and business correspondence English at night school in Hong Kong, and her own infant bedding business. Obviously, she became a master at multitasking, organization, determination and perseverance.

Upon retiring, she took up gardening and found to her surprise that she had discovered her true passion. As a result, she spent many years as a gardening newsletter editor in California, served on the board of a prominent, local garden club, designed her own large landscape to acclaim, and studied famous gardens throughout Europe and Asia.

With her return to England in the summer of 2006, this indefatigable 50+ woman has embraced technology by agreeing to be the “Garden Expert” on 50Fabulous.com where she will share her knowledge and passion with other 50+ women. She is also developing her own small propagation business as well.

Dawn firmly believes that beautiful gardens of any size can enhance your life with beauty, fragrance, butterflies, birds, tranquillity and, yes, even exercise!

Flowers for Friends, Food for the Hungry

September 1st, 2007

As I wander around my garden with my family, I point out various plants and say, “That’s Mary’s geranium...... Mavis’s bloodgrass...... Pat’s lily......” all cuttings or seeds from friends’ gardens. They have their own botanical names, of course, but I much prefer to remember them as gifts from people I love. More...

Natural Disasters

August 1st, 2007

If you’re in an area where there is a danger of mudslides or other forms of soil erosion, start planning your battle now. Look for books which list shrubs, vines, perennials and grasses to help with this problem. And, as always, your local nursery should be able to suggest a number of such plants. Terracing helps to prevent this problem, especially when selectively planted, and sensible drainage channels can be created where necessary. More...

The Science of Watering

July 1st, 2007

In these days of global warming and water preservation, I thought perhaps a few words on the science of watering might not come amiss. Why is it so dry when I watered it just this morning? is the oft-repeated lament. More...

Climbers & Color

June 1st, 2007

Climbers have always fascinated me with their casual ramblings. I also love beautiful old walls whether brick, stone or rock, and the enhancement of flowers and foliage merely increases their charm. There are two lovely old flint-faced cottages in my village, side by side; one is clothed in a clematis montana “Rubra”, the other in a yellow clematis with purple wisteria draped over a gate, arbour, and fence. This is one of the reasons I prefer to walk through the village at this time of year; there is so much beauty to be seen, it is dangerous to be behind the wheel of a car! More...

A Woman of Vision

March 1st, 2007

With the state of the environment high on the list of most people’s priorities these days, we ask what we can do, as individuals, to help to bring a balance to global warming and pollution. One woman stands out, far ahead of the rest of us. Many of you will have heard of Wangari Maathai, the strong, remarkable Kenyan visionary. More...

Shower your Garden with Love

February 1st, 2007

Showering your garden with love is easy, right? You can trundle through the nursery, fill your trolley, bring a mass of plants home and put them into the ground. Easy... but what are you feeding them? Like us, they need food. "Well, there are all those boxes and cans of fertilizers and..." Yes, indeed there are, but let’s get down to basics...down to the soil itself. More...

The Plan that Keeps on Growing

January 1st, 2007

At 50+, there are many reasons you could want to reinvent your garden. You may finally have the time to create that garden you’ve dreamed of; perhaps your once wonderful garden has suffered neglect and you’d like to spruce it up; maybe you’re bored with it and just want to make some changes; or, perhaps, you’ve relocated. More...

Spreading Your Wings

December 1st, 2006

When I lived in Northern California, I belonged to a wonderful and hugely energetic garden club. Many of the members were exceptional gardeners and we were all able to draw upon one another’s expertise. We called ourselves ‘dirt gardeners’ because we liked to get our hands down in the dirt…. well, I admit to wearing gloves no matter what I’m doing in the garden, but we took the ‘hands on’ approach.  More...

Involve the Children

November 1st, 2006

Remember to invite children to garden with you. The first flower I ever became aware of was the nasturtium; I loved its vibrant colors and its adventurous spirit as it stretched and climbed, peeping through the trellis, embellishing the greenhouse and investigating the arched canes of the runner beans nearby. We used the tart leaves in sandwiches and salads for an added ‘bite’, adding the blossoms for decoration. Its peppercorn-sized seeds are perfect for chubby little hands to manage and many hundreds were planted, and I imagine that’s where my interest in gardening started.  More...

Whimsy in the Garden

October 1st, 2006

When you start to plan next year’s ‘look,’ as you salivate over all those bulb, seed and plant brochures with their irresistible pictures of promise, remember to give some thought to fun, mystery and intrigue to your garden as well. More...

A Garden Constant

September 1st, 2006

I think shrubs are probably my favorite plants for the garden, perhaps because so much can be achieved by so few. Trees are beautiful, especially if you have plenty of space, and bedding plants can form a magical palette. But, shrubs are the mainstay as far as I am concerned: they corner, anchor, structure and fill in throughout the year. If you haven’t concentrated on them before, start studying the huge selection available; study pictures of them, make a note of the conditions they require, and start to imagine the display they could afford your garden. More...

Building A Garden

The Beauty of Downsizing

July 1st, 2006

Moving from a house with a large garden to an apartment with a small courtyard – or vice versa – is challenging and should be looked upon as fun, apart from the fact that this will free up some time for other pursuits. More...
